Personalize

SharePoint is far too often set up without proper planning. You’ll see things like an unnecessary number of pages set up, and web parts displayed on a page that have no business being there. If your site is poorly setup/maintained….

Sucks to be you.

There isn’t much you can do about consolidating the number of pages if you’re not an admin. You can talk to the site administrator and try to organize your site but you yourself can’t do anything. However, you can change the way a page is visually organized (as long as you have contribute rights, at a minimum).

Take a look at the following image. There isn’t much going on with this page but let’s say that the Hello World web part was really annoying you. You’re tired of seeing it, it has nothing to do with your work, doesn’t need to be there. Get rid of it.

To customize a page, click on your account’s display name on the top right of the page. In the previous image, I was signed in as an administrator. In the next image I’m signed in with another account that only has contribute rights. When I click the display name, a menu will open and you’ll see “Personalize this Page” as highlighted in the image.

When you click on the menu item, the page switches over to edit mode. In edit mode, you can drag a web part from one location and move it around on the page. In our case, we want to hide the useless Hello World web part. Each web part has an edit button. When you click on it, you’ll have several options. In our case, we want to select “Close”.

Note: Close really just hides the web part from view. If the web part does heavy processing and causes the page to load slowly, you won’t notice a performance boost.

Click on Exit edit mode on the top right corner, above your web parts and the undesired web part will be gone as in the image below.

So how does this affect other users? It doesn’t. That was your own personal view. When I switch back to my administrator account, the web part is still there.
